Re: Use of English

The last post was more of a call for help. Right now we are trying to douse a fire caused by what I think was a slip due to a wrong use of English.

It actually happened to a friend whose fiancee works in a consultancy firm. They are going to the altar in December; date and aso-ebi already chosen.

Unfortunately, she chose option A!

Every body believes there are some underG moves between her and the boss. My guy now says that she had been working there, with same boss for quite a while and despite the late hours and all, she has rejected all entreaties for her to find another job though she is very qualified. You know how all kinds of talk come out at times like this.

I think she is just happy where she is. But even Wifey says it was a slip, not a mistake.

I think it was just a problem of translating her thought in Yoruba to words in English. if you speak Yoruba quite well, please how else would you translate the following:

  1. Mo n'ba Oga mi lo s'ile.
  2. Emi ati Oga mi a jo ma lo s'ile.
  3. Oga mi ma gbe mi lo s'ile.
We are still trying to douse the fire caused by that slip. I just needed a woman's perspective to this and my wife is already biased.

Meanwhile, the poor girl has been crying her eyes out.

WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
She is going to home (HER OWN HOME, mon lo si ile) with her boss; who is also going home(to his house pelu oga mi).
mon lo si ile pelu oga mi....makes sense to me....and is the fiancee angry about this?

I think they have more problem than this. If he is going to break up with her because of this, then they shouldn't be getting married. Nonsense. Like his crusty ass is faithful. Any of the response, if you are in a trusting relationship, would have been fine. You'll even be able to make a joke out of it.

I think the main issue here is her fiancee OFFERED to come pick her up, but she PREFERRED to go with her boss, especially if she knew her relationship with her boss was already suspect, I definitely think she said the wrong thing.

She should try and talk to her fiancee and sort things out. More like ask someone whom he respects to talk to him on her behalf.

wao!! he broke up with her? dang!! u know they have more serious issues than this 'i dey follow my oga go house' business right. i mean seriously?

Wait oo! He broke up with her for why? I confuse

the question really is why she was going to her boss' house after working late...

even if there's nothing going on... one has be careful to stay away from things that may look improper...

@Temite: O ya read what you have written again yourself and tell me it doesn't sound somehow.
@MineX: Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda but the fact is that she did make a suspicious comment. Thanx.
@Definitive: Gbam! My thots exactly. Maybe I should ask them to come and see you for counseling. Thanx.
@Twist: [NIMMO scratching head] Did I say he was breaking up with her? They have problems agreed but its more of mis-communication. Many thanx.
@9ice: He never break up with her o! Still trying to sort things out for them though. I may have to translate everything from Yoruba to English, I guess. Many thanx for your comments.
@DODHawk: Actually, she DID NOT go to her boss's house but it sounds like that when translated from Yoruba. Like you advise, one needs to be careful how we speak English. Many thanx for your comments.

It simply means her boss will bring her home (her's, i bet she meant). Broda should find betta excuse jare. Like she would ask for permission if she wanted to sleep with her boss. It's my first time here and I like.

Wow..talk about miscommunication..

If there's no trust, then there's no point.

oh no.....

*shakes head.

There's fire on the mountain.

But seriously, she said that?
Did she mean it though or it's just pure miscommunication?

I am one of those people who, once I get comfortable somewhere (workwise), I don't want to move on, even if I could even be earning more money. In this case though, I think her focus needs to be on having a good dialogue with her man and making sure he knows exactly where she stands and why she isn't open to switching jobs. It might be anger on her part that switching would be seen as an admission of guilt, for example.

serious matter o!
i agree with Definitive.
but if she had something to do with the boss she would not make that kind of slip. i think it was a harmful mistake. should not be reason enough to break the deal.

there are underlying issues at play here.

1st time here. absolutely love it.

wow. He really thinks she is stepping out with her boss? There might be some other issue going on here for the insecurities. I hope they figure things out.

NIMMO how did she answer in english or in yoruba...in english the mistake is definitely avoidable...

to be honest if my 'other' said that to me alarm bells would start to ring and i would start watcfhing him like a hawk

there is something else to this...a simple slip would not cos him to rethink the whole thing... has he already voiced concerns about this?!!!

secondly i'm suprised she didnt take up his offer of a lift?

The problem is if she was cheating on her S.F. would she be stupid enought to tell him, except for out of spite?
After lunch some time ago, I told this lady "It was nice to have you for lunch." She laughed and I guess she got the error on my part. Plus the quizical look on my face was also hilarious.
But then he should have asked for clarification on what she said. O ko, o fi ake kori.

He broke up with her cos of that??? lol wahala. Nah, there musta been some underlying issues.

So because she doesn't want to stop working where she currently is means she has something with her boss? O ga gan o

**this is all very late btw thanks to rethots post lol

This is a sad tale. My yoruba is not perfect so I sometimes get into trouble with my husband too. But well, he trusts me. So when I say rubbish he gently remindsme how many meanings people can read into what i Have said.

I pray they resolve their issues tho.

N.I.M.M.O said...

Wow! This is getting seriouser and seriouser but I think the diversity of opinions actually underscores the seriousness of the matter.

Another post coming up!

is he stupid

if she was doing the boss, is she likely to tell her fiance who she loves so much she agreed to walk down the aisle for.

The dude is crazy or he is just plain suspicious. He must be doing someone, why is it so easy for him to not trust her.

except he is a playa in hiding.
whatever

Men are so jealous....But I think she should have asked her fiance to come pick her up...instead of going with the boss.. the thing is this last issue is just the straw that broke the camels back....we dont know everything that has gone down before... There are so many girls sleeping with their bosses that its impossible not to be suspicious when it seems like someone may be doing it... its like asking my mum not to suspect my dad of cheating....hellooooo!.....plzzzzzz

Anonymous said...

Oh and I dont understand yoruba so there might be something i'm not getting.

Nefertiti said...

Although she could have said "Oga mi ma gbe mi WA si le", I think there are definitely other deep seated issues here. Mainly trust.

'...gbe mi lo...' implies something else especially if there was prior suspicions on her relationship with oga.
